Recurrent infections such as colds and chest infections

Many parents find osteopathy useful if their children are having constant illnesses such as colds and chest infections.

All children will suffer from some infections – it seems that this is necessary to build an effective immune system.  They should usually recover within a week to ten days.  Some children however seem to be trapped in a cycle of recurrent  cold or chest infections. They may have been prescribed several courses of antibiotics but are still becoming ill.  Some of the children will have had bronchiolitis as a very little baby.

These children often have restrictions in the structures surrounding the lungs which can impede circulation and lymphatic drainage from the chest, making if more difficult for the lungs to function efficiently and get rid of the infection.

Treatment usually involves gentle treatment to the ribs and any surrounding soft tissue to remove these restrictions and help the lungs to function efficiently.  For some children diet can play an important part in their recovery.  Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables may help as can keeping the child’s intake of dairy products low.
